A long time ago, in a far away place a crazy plan was hatched to go
back road racing at the weekends! Admittedly this came about late at
night after several pints of Amber Nectar! However , the morning after,
due mainly to November boredom we decided to make our dreams
come true!! That very afternoon we went onto that well known web site
with motorcycles for sale “sheds R us”, no Ebay!
We purchased a very down trodden GPZ1100B1 (check out the pics)
We immediately set about its destruction Throwing parts over our
shoulders in a vain attempt to turn it into a classic machine ( check out
Jack our 11 year old race mechanic, stripping it down)Once the
dilapidated machine was apart we could see just how sad the old girl
really was!! Never mind bracing the frame, we had to weld it back
together 1st!!!!!!!!!! Alan the shop spanner man, got to it with his tig
welder, and a couple o nights later, there she was braced,
Gusseted frame, boy its gonna handle well!! Even Guinness the boarder
collie looks impressed.
By now we were really getting into the spirit of things, once the frame
was braced we nipped it round to the local stove enamellers to get it
cooked and look this is what we ended up with. Meanwhile we had
stripped the forks, and rebuilt them with new seals, we also replaced
the stock saggy old fork springs with brand new HyperPro Springs and
heavy duty fork oil.
We replaced the stock 19” front wheel with an 18” hoop from a
GSXR1100H and fitted brand spanking new EBC prolite race discs!
At the same time we fitted opposed piston callipers from a CBR600 and
obviously changed the hoses to Earls Performance braided lines.
Rear End Next! ZXR400 rear wheel into the metamachex arm that
came in the bike, we just gave it a coat of black, ZX636C rear wavy
disc! ZXR750 rear caliper! We also tret ourselves to a pair of Ohlins
remote rear shockers bit flash I know but we had sold a few of the
standard items by now, so we thought what the heck!!!
By now it was paint time, we thought about standard red, but decided
to go green! I know there are a few Lawson reps out there, but they do
look good in that classic colour, all paint was done in house and got
the “kawabunga” graphics done at Graphic Attack (check him out in
our links)Thanks Rob, hes the Mutts help out with all you graphic stuff,
he's got loads on his computer! So Chasis wise, that's where we are
right now, next chapter is Motor build, once that's done we can drop
In in and get the chain adjustment correct, wire it and so on_ _ _ _ _ _ _
MOTOR BUILD
The engine was in quite a shabby condition and we hadn’t heard it
running (cos we bought it with no carbs or injection) It was meant to
have a Unitrack head fitted, but guess what? The man on Ebay Lied!!!
We Couldn’t see from the photos but it only had the standard head
fitted, well that Ebay for ya! Bit of a blow actually cos the Unitrack has
under bucket shims as stock, now if we wanted to run a decent cam
we would have to use APE shim under buckets and retainers! More
expense! (thinking about gettin the missus to open a massage parlor!
Maybe not you ain’t seen my missus wouldn't make a great profit me
thinks) Got the crank out, sent it off to Chris the crank for welding and
balancing, junked the stock alloy clutch basket in favour of the steel
type fitted to the early Z900 now there's a tip for ya!!!
Next we bored the block to 1200cc using JE hi compression pistons!
And flowed the cylinder head to a spec that is to secret here at
Kawabunga HQ!, Whilst we were at it, we removed the tiddler valves and
slammed in some dustbin lid types!!! That should do it!! Heavy duty
cylinder studs, heavy duty valve springs from Star racing in the States
are also being fitted.
OK movin on_ _ _ Cranks back and in the cases, sprayed the cases
black in the meantime, fitted the earlier clutch, this has to be fitted
before the cases are out back together, JE pistons are now in and the
block is fitted.Next job, building the gas flowed cylinder head, because
we’ve fitted bigger valves we’ve had to shorten them to get the Z650
style shims in, we 60 off each valve, and shortened the valve collets by
20 that should do the trick! Not much more, degree in the Straightline
Racing cams with the slotted sprocket, then drop the motor in the frame.
Well I’m Knackered and want a pint so speak soon _ _ _ _ _ _ _!!!!!!!!!!!!
